Electronic Discussion
(100-200 points) Deadlines The electronic discussion may be completed during either or both of the first two project-collection periods. Completing the electronic discussion during both periods will result in the electronic discussion counting for 200 points, rather than the 100 points you would receive for completing the electronic discussion during only one of the periods. To receive credit for the electronic discussion you must contribute to the discussion two 20-line messages each week during the appropriate project-collection period(s). Assignment An alternative to the paper reading journal is the electronic discussion. The concept behind the electronic discussion is the same as with the paper journal, and the hints for good journal writing outlined in the journal description would apply in this medium, as well. The difference is that rather than writing your entries on paper and submitting them to me, you will be sending your entries to the group for consideration and comment via a Web-based program called WebCT. How It Works Each week, you will need to read the messages sent by the other members of the discussion. You will also need to contribute to the discussion two 20-line messages each week (6 messages, total, for each project collection period). Your messages should be posted on different days (otherwise, the discussion becomes simply a set of isolated journal entries). You may post more than two messages per week, but do not exceed 50 lines during the entire week (this is to prevent your demise at the hands of the discussion members who will have to read your entries). Feel free to email messages directly to me; I’ll respond, and they won’t count toward your 50-line total, unless you want them to. Responding In addition to following the hints for good journal writing, listed in the journal description , I also urge you to respond to other people’s entries. Following a “thread” in the discussion is what this sort of assignment is all about. You are developing a piece of writing collaboratively and asynchronously, if you want to be technical about it. Evaluation Your electronic discussion will be evaluated on: 1) completion of all six entries, 2) frequency and regularity of contributions, 3) quality of thought expressed, 4) elaboration and development of ideas, 5) use of text for examples and quotations, and 6) referral to the entries of other students. |
