The church was the focus of our work in Jamaica. Just over 100 years old, the church was beautiful, weathered, dignified. There were ferns growing from the mortar and birds in the high open-windowed rafters. All around was a sense of quiet and repose.

When we arrived at the church, our hosts showed us around before feeding us a wonderful meal prepared by the women of the church. We ate our meal on the porch of the Manse, located directly behind the church. In fact, we ate all of our noon meals on the open porch. The food was generally excellent, with lots of curried meat, rice, and a sort of sweet coleslaw called "stir." After dinner, church members shuttled us off to our various abodes.

Mount Ward Church, Sunday morning. That's Marty & Kate on the steps at left. The pickup is one of the few conveyances for parishioners on their way to church.

The Methodist Manse, where Frankella Brandon lived. We ate our noon meals on the porch at right.

The porch of the Methodist Manse. At left is Joy, one of the key members of the church. To her right is Grant Tilford, speaking with Linwall Clark's daughter (on right) and her friend. At far right is Ed Heyer. Note the large lock and bars on the porch (you can see the bars in the picture of the Manse). The jug at the far right of this picture held some of the sweet fruit punch we drank at every meal.
